Giraffe Hero

Irena Sendler
We are studying what are heroes nowdays. They are not people with superpowers, just people with humanity. My favorite hero is Irena Sendler. She was a nurse during the Second World War, she was born in 1910 in Poland and she died in 2008.
She led a secret rescue of 2.500 Jewish children from Warsaw Ghetto and those hiding in the Warsaw area, during the Holocaust in the Second World War. She provided them with false identity documents and shelter outside the Ghetto, and saved them from sure death. The German occupiers eventually discovered her activities and she was arrested by the Gestapo, tortured, and sentenced to death, but she managed to evade execution and survive the war. In 1965, Irena was recognised by the State of Israel as Righteous among the Nations. She also earnt the Order of the White Eagle, Poland's highest honor, for her efforts. Today, just a few people know her, but I think she deserves to be remembered.
